Teachers passion the sound of success
11 March 2010
OVER the years people have wondered what Bill Griffith’s real job is.
This year the St Marys guitar teacher is celebrating 40 years in business, having turned his passion into a fulltime job.
Since 1970 he has clocked up 25,000 hours or 50,000 lessons.
“I’ve made a success out of something most people said wouldn’t last, right from the start” he said.
“People always asked ‘what’s your proper job, what do you really do’ or ‘that’s all you do?”’
Aged 60, he still teaches at his house at St Marys; his students range in age from nine to 70.
“That’s the great thing about music, you can keep playing it,” he said.
“There is just so much to learn on the instrument.”
Mr Griffith has been a success—he set up audio and visual learning systems and wrote three books.
He’s also taught guitar to some of the most disadvantaged students in the state.
He started the flying guitar teachers program at Bourke and taught at Parklea, Silverwater and Parramatta jails.
“Everyone should have an opportunity (to play an instrument),” he said.
“When I was growing up, my parents battled to pay for my lessons but everyone should have the chance.
“If you don’t like it that’s fine, but at least you had a go.”
Mr Griffith opened a studio at Queen St, St Marys, in 1970, after his move from Bankstown.
After nine months he was bought-out by a restaurant so he taught at home.
“The first year in that house we had 110 students a week, classes of 10 in the lounge room,” he said.
It was also in his first year of business that he met his wife, Jacqueline.
